Welcome to TruffleTracks Inc. I’m Jayne Kline, the owner with Lucca, my truffle hunting dog. TruffleTracks Inc. is the result of my desire to do something I’m passionate about. Although I admit that it would have been difficult to describe my dream job, I believe it has landed in my lap. Here’s how it happened….
I bought Lucca, my Lagotto Ramagno, in August 2010. Although I knew at the time that the Lagotto is the only dog in the world bred to hunt truffles, I didn’t think it would ever apply to me and Lucca. Then I read an article about a casino tycoon paying 330,000 dollars for two white truffles and that peaked my interest in truffles. I was amazed to learn that we’ve successfully grown the black Perigord truffle locally, here in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and nearby in Tennessee.
On a whim, I picked up the phone and called Jane Morgan Smith, a truffle grower in NC. Her truffle farm was less than a two hour drive so I decided to pay her a visit. I was interested in learning more about hunting for truffles and Jane loved the idea that I owned a Lagotto puppy. We clicked instantly and I decided to pursue truffle-hunting training for me and Lucca.
We spent several days in Luray, Va with dog trainer extraordinaire, Lisa Kennell. I learned quickly that I was the one who needed to be trained. Within days I was learning to “trust my dog”. Since then Lucca and I have spent many days working on training exercises and hunting for truffles. And we’ve been having a lot of fun along the way.
My goal with TruffleTracks Inc. is to find and deliver fresh black Perigord truffles to some of the best chefs and finest grocers in the region. Lucca and I plan to find most of them ourselves, but since our season runs from December to March, I also plan to import truffles from Australia during our off season. TruffleTracks Inc. is also happily helping Jane Morgan Smith market her truffle butter; it’s out of this world and made with local butter and truffles.
